Come back often, as more questions and answers will be posted. Have a question?
If you have a personal question, I’ll answer it directly. If your question is general, I’ll post it here.
What types of projects do you design most frequently?
Half of my work is for additions and half of my work is for new homes. On occasion I will get a request for design work for a kitchen or bath remodel. Once in a while I will get a request to reorganize the use of space because of lifestyle changes within the family.
Where have you worked and had your designs built?
I have done hands-on work and have had many of my designs built by others in various states across the United States. The map here indicates some of these states with a star.
Don’t see your State yet?
Let’s see what we can do to change that.
I have also had the privilege of doing hands-on work internationally.
What types of hands-on jobs have you done?
I started out as a framing carpenter’s helper on a framing crew in the fall of 1983. I was the designer-builder for my family home in 1992-1993. I have built decks and a few additions. I have my own woodworking shop where I make cabinets and furniture on a small scale.
I’ve had the privilege of being part of some restoration work of historical homes in Virginia. On occasion I do interior house painting as well as fine art mural painting. I’ve done a couple of stone work projects.
Over the years I have been involved with doing landscaping projects and Urban farming. Working with groups such as Habitat for Humanity, Samaritan’s Purse, God’s Kitchen and Open Hands Ministry doing hurricane relief construction work keeps me on my toes and teaching me new things all the time.
What is a DreamHome Design Coach™?
A DreamHome Design Coach ™ is someone who has the experience and knowledge of the process of home building. They understand the language and the nuances of the industry and can effectively help you navigate the complex process. They can communicate clearly to both sides of the process…the building professionals and you, the home dreamer.
A coach guides you through the design-build process using a practical step-by-step plan that takes you from dreaming and gathering ideas to defining what DreamHome means to you. From there, your coach works with you to create a dream team of building professionals whom you resonate with.
Because of this guidance, you can be confident that you have made informed choices that will make building your DreamHome a memorable experience.
Why should I hire you as my DreamHome Design Coach™?
The first part of this answer is because I strongly believe three things:
- Everyone is creative…and what better way to express this creativity, but through the designing and building of your DreamHome, addition or renovation?
- Everyone deserves to have the opportunity to design their own home. This doesn’t mean that you don’t employ professionals, but what it does mean is that You should be a major player in the designing of Your Home.
- And thirdly, I believe everyone has the right to actively engage in the building process of their DreamHome, addition, or renovation.
And to be able to do this requires at least a basic knowledge and understanding of the home building process… And that’s where my thirty-plus years in the home building industry makes me a perfect fit for you.
I have the winning combination of hands-on experience and designing and drawing plans. I work on both sides of the table. This gives me a deeper understanding of how things work in the real world, which translates into anticipating potential problems before they arise.
I have the patience to explain concepts in as many different ways as necessary in order for you to understand. I understand that people can understand the words being said, but don’t necessarily understand “what” is being said.
As your Coach, I feel it is my job to make sure you understand the “what”, “who”,“why”, “how”, “when”, and “where” of the design-build process. The more you understand, the easier it will be for you to make informed decisions and confidently engage in the process.
Will you actually be designing and drawing my plans as part of your coaching services?
I would love to have the opportunity to design and draw your plans if you want your project done in any part of Virginia or the Southwestern part of Pennsylvania.
I can provide preliminary plans for all other geographic areas, but I professionally feel that it is best that you get an architect or residential designer that is local to you to complete the final drawings. Your local architect or residential designer will be far more familiar with the nuances specific to your local market.
Also, your local Architect or Residential Designer will know the best builders to suggest. They can tell you about the best vendors to go check out. For instance, they might know of your little known friendly local hardware store that can save you hundreds of dollars on paint for your house. Remember, not all stores are created equally.
Will you help me pick my ‘dream team’?
I will guide you through a set of questions to ask your potential members of your dream team. I will explain in detail what to look for and what to avoid. You are ultimately responsible for your final decisions because only you know what resonates with you.
Not only must the team you pick be qualified, but you must feel comfortable working with them on a professional level. The key in picking your dream team is to take your time and do your due diligence. Skipping steps may not give you the best results.
